Definition and Importance of Health:

The term ‘health’ is a positive and dynamic concept. Better health is central to human happiness and well-being. For a healthy life cycle, a person needs to have a balanced diet and has to regularly exercise.

One must also live in a proper shelter, take enough sleep, and have good hygiene habits. It also makes an important contribution to economic progress, as healthy populations live longer, are more productive, and save more.

The health of all organisms depends on their surroundings or their environment. Our social environment is an important factor in our individual health. In other words, health refers to the outcome of the interaction between the individual and his environment.

We need food for health and for food, we will have to earn money by doing work. For this, the opportunity to do work has to be available. Good economic conditions and jobs are, therefore, needed for individual health. We need to be happy in order to be truly healthy. Social equality and harmony are important for individual health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined health as: “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or illness or infirmity”.

In 1986, the WHO made further clarifications:

A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.”This means that health is a resource to support an individual’s function in wider society, rather than an end in itself. A healthy lifestyle provides the means to lead a full life with meaning and purpose.
